How to select the perfect
Salmon Fishing Rod?

Fishing enthusiasts are well aware of the fact that selecting the appropriate fishing rod plays a vital role in successful fishing. Game fish come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and habits. This necessitates the requirement of different types of rods for catching different fishes. For example, if you are interested in salmon then you will have to get your self a fishing rod which is tailored for trapping salmons.

Salmon fishing rods are of two different kinds. They are:-

- Bait rod
- Fly rod and a spinner

Though you can find salmon fishing rods in the market, which claim to serve the dual purpose of bait rod as well as fly rod, but most experienced fishermen advice against buying such rods. According to them it's better to get yourself two differently specialized rods rather than having one rod that serves the purpose of both.

Going into the specifics of the two types of salmon fishing rods - the fly rod, is generally longer, as well as more flexible than the other type that is the bait rod. When you buy a salmon fishing rod, go for the one which has a double handed fly rod. It will allow you to cast with both hands as well as either one of your hands. You may need to cast using both hands when you fish for big salmons, using heavy reels and lines. The ideal length of an average salmon fishing rod can range from 10 to 15 feet.  The rods should also be flexible enough to be able to bend through its whole length, and then snap back to its original position.

A bait rod is characterized by a tough butt end. This helps the fisherman to control a fighting salmon. Ideally, one should use medium to heavy rods for large fishes, in the case of salmons it's better to opt for heavy rods. However you should ensure that the rod is sensitive enough, so that you are able to sense a fish biting at the bait.

Salmon fishing rods are generally made of graphite; it ensures that the rods are strong. However e-glass may also be used to ensure sufficient flexibility.
